Just because you and everyone you know has a Windows-based computer, except for a few Macintosh friends, doesn't mean that other operating systems aren't also used. There is another operating system, that can be downloaded by anyone, free of charge, named Linux, and it comes with a whole community of people. By looking at Linux in a closer way, we will be able to compare it to Windows.

Anyone that has used Linux understands that the flexibility is one of the primary highlights of this OS. The fact that it is distributed by many different companies is part of the flexibility component of the software. Windows, as everyone knows, is only made by Microsoft, one of the largest technology companies in the world. This has given Windows a dominant position when it comes to personal computing, and it also limits your choices in many ways. The same, of course, is true for Apple, which is the only company you can deal with when you have a Mac. When it comes to an open source operating system like Linux, however, there's no single company that runs everything and you mostly interact with other users when you need help.

You might think that it would be hard to find support if you use Linux. Windows users have lots of problems and need support often, and there is lot of technical support, since most people use Windows. If you check it out, you'll find a different story. You might have to do a little work by searching, but you will find Linux has quite good tech support. As long as you don't mind going to forums, and the informal atmosphere, you can get support. When you go to a Linux forum and pose a question about a problem, you will get a prompt reply, normally. So while you don't have the same type of official support you get when you buy a computer with a licensed version of Windows, the answers and technical support are available all the same.

Windows is a great OS, but not as reliable as Linux in most cases. Every version of Windows that has ever been released has had problems in the system itself. The Windows operating system is known for crashing. Very few versions of Linux have ever crash, and it is far faster in regard to boot time than the Windows operating system. Although Linux has a lot less memory than Windows, it utilizes what it has more efficiently. The performance and speed of your system will definitely improve. With all of these benefits, you might want to consider using Linux over Windows, especially if you are very frustrated with the Microsoft OS.

In conclusion, there's no one best operating system for everybody. If you use Windows on your computer, you know about its bad points, so you will be glad to know that Linux has bad points also. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes. You might like Linux, if you like knowing how things work on the inside. Simple and easy is the way most people want their computer experience, and that would make Windows their best choice.
