Walking canes are used by many elderly persons who have gait disorders. These work by widening the individual's base of support, making it easier to balanced. The types of canes range between a standard cane made of wood or perhaps aluminum to quad canes and walk canes as well as canes designed especially for women who need something stylish instead of plain aluminum.
As a former nurse, I have had to help an elderly person with walking, or ambulating as it is called, utilizing assistive devices. I find it amazing how most people employ a cane the wrong way or have no idea how to assist an elderly person to walk using it. Here's a few methods on how to properly assist an elderly person to use theirs to stop many dangerous falls.
Be certain the cane is the proper height, which will be just about half their height or reach the inside crease of their wrist when their arms are resting at their sides. Be sure it has a rubber tip on the bottom for safety. A walking cane should be used on the opposite side to the affected or weakened leg. After that, advise the elderly person to take some of the weight off of the bad leg and to step forward first with the good leg. For the second step, advance the cane and step forward together with the bad leg all at once, leaning their weight on the cane. For steps, hold the railing using the hand on the affected side and lean the body weight on the cane to step up first with the good leg. Next, take the second step by way of advancing the cane while using the bad leg. You should always take steps one at a time.
To assist the elderly in ambulating with a cane, walk beside them, somewhat to their side, and should you think they are not balanced and leaning, position yourself in the direction where they may be leaning to be able to assist them to the ground uninjured if they begin to fall. Most helpful is to keep a gait belt around the elderly person's waist (so that you can grab onto it if they begin to fall or lean dangerously). Instead of a gait belt, feel free to use the belt that is around their waist if they are wearing one. Always continue to be close and walk with the elderly. You'll be able to prevent many falls by teaching them how to use the cane and assiting them appropriately.
