You will have to think carefully which way to go when considering buying a new lawnmower. Petrol or electric? To be honest, the most critical thing to bear in mind is the area of grass you have to deal with. Other considerations will apply, but the size of the lawn and its distance from a power supply will usually decide the matter. How to choose?
Electric Lawnmowers
For small or medium sized lawns, it's difficult to beat an electric mower. Light in weight, they are easy to manoeuvre (they usually are push- rather than power-driven) and quiet as well. You can get both rotary and cylinder models, both needing less in the way of maintenance than a petrol mower. Electric rotaries are especially good as far as maintenance is concerned. Aside from cleaning and blade-sharpening they more or less look after themselves.
The bother (and the hazard) of the mains lead is the major drawback of course. In a large garden it becomes a real inconvenience. A circuit breaker in the supply will safeguard you.
One of the best examples of electric rotary mowers is the Bosch Rotak range. They come in mains-powered (from 32 to 43cm) and rechargeable (from 34 to 43cm) versions.
A cordless mower avoids of course the big disadvantage of electrics - the mains lead, while keeping the lightness and low maintenance of an electric mower.
If you would like the great striped finish that a cylinder mower will give, but like the idea of an electric mower, check out the Atco Windsor.
Petrol lawnmowers
A petrol lawnmower will customarily be more powerful and more sturdily-built than an electric. As with electrics, you can get both cylinder and rotary versions. Due to their greater weight, they will often be power-driven although some petrol rotaries are push only.
Usually constructed in steel and alloy, they will withstand harder use. A quality machine, correctly maintained can last a lifetime.
Servicing and regular maintenance will be important if you want to prolong the life of your mower. Petrol cylinder mowers (thought by many to be the best) will need especially careful maintenance. An annual service is always advisable - just don't leave it until just before the season when everybody will have the same idea!
A great choice of petrol rotary mowers is produced by McCulloch. In sizes from 40 to 53cm, they are available in push and self-drive designs.
So there you have it. There are things to be said for each. It pays to consider sensibly about precisely which is going to suit, and remember to buy the finest you can afford.
