When you first meet your dog, chances are he didn't show his true colors and may have come to you with a few "problems". Fortunately, continuing your training sessions will pay off, with a dog that is well behaved and joy to be around.

Always take your dog for a nice walk before leaving for a period of time. By letting them get some exercise before you go, they are less anxious and not so likely to run amok in the house and do damage.

Before choosing an animal behavior specialist to train your dog, ask the specialist about their methods. Many animal behavior specialists have opposing opinions on how to correctly train dogs. Be sure to verify that the trainer you hire has similar ideas as yours, prior to implementing any of their tips.

While training your dog, it pays to use irresistible treats as rewards. Even if its foods that are not generally permitted, like hotdogs or cheese.

There are a lot of tricks you can teach your dog to do; a common one is training him to hold a toy in his mouth without chewing it. Whenever he accepts the toy, you can feed him a treat. After doing that a few times, stop until the dog takes the toy in his mouth. As soon as this happens, click and then provide the reward. As he gets even better, only give him a reward for holding the plushie in his mouth for a few seconds.

Do not let the pressures of your day or life influence how you speak to your dog when you are training. If the dog has done nothing wrong, then it should not be treated as such.

Often, bad chewing habits are caused by anxiety. You can also keep your dog from causing damage while you're away by humanely enclosing him in an appropriately sized dog crate or some other small space of his own with a chew toy to keep him occupied.

Dogs will always be dogs, so expect his wild side to emerge if you do not give him proper care. Dogs need an appropriate diet, a place to run out their energy and lots of ways to keep busy.

If you are trying to train your dog to perform something that is very complicated, break it down into small steps. One example is teaching your pet to fetch the newspaper in the morning. You first need to teach him exactly what a newspaper is and then how to hold it. Once he has those steps under his belt, he should be taught what the object is called, where he can find it and to go to it. You need to teach him then how to pick the object up. The last step is to train him to bring the object to you. By breaking the task down into understandable steps, the dog will better understand what is expected of it.

Before you begin training your dog, you need to establish yourself as the alpha. Be friendly with your dog, but also be firm. Always walk in front, in the leadership position, letting your dog follow behind.

You will get better results if employ a mixture of treats as a reward for your dog. These treats must differ from ordinary treats, because you want the dog to look forward to getting a special reward when it obeys your command.

Use your dog's name when you can, as it will help to get your dog to pay attention. By using his name all the time in the first month of having our dog, he should associate his name with focusing on you. Choose a puppy name that sounds differently than other words your puppy may hear throughout the day.

Try using a clicker to help enforce good behavior. To use a clicker, you will be creating a positive correlation between their positive acts with the sound the clicker makes. Start by clicking and immediately giving a reward, and repeat this several times a day for a few days. Slowly but surely, your dog will understand what the sound of the clicker means and you can shape his or her behavior accordingly.

Scold your puppy for chewing your belongings right away. This teaches your puppy what is acceptable to chew, making it less likely that he will chew your belongings when you are not able to watch him closely.

Dogs are dogs and need time to act as such. Dogs need food designed for dogs, plenty of exercise, and lots of things to do.

Even when you are tired or tense, be conscious of how you speak to your dog. Dogs react to the tone of a human voice, so be careful not the be harsh to them without provocation.

Playing tug-of-war with your puppy makes training less effective. Tug-of-war, along with wrestling and chasing games, teach the puppy to be dominant and to bite at you. Once your puppy is older and well trained, you can play rough games.

Learning your dogs individuality is an important step when training your dog. With this understanding, anyone can effectively train their dog. Make sure to tailor the training to a dog's specific personality.
