There are eleven Sikh matrimonial dos for a successful marriage. It is applicable for the bride, groom, and their families.
Do:
1. Choose Sikh as a marriage partner.
2. While choosing no consideration should be given to race, caste or lineage.
3. The spouse should be of marriageable age and should be emotionally and physically mature enough to fulfill the responsibilities of the marriage.
4. Marriage takes place in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib. Religious prayer Ardas is offered, and Kirpan (ceremonial short sword) and Kara (ceremonial iron bangle) are exchanged.
5. The in laws, family members and friends of both sides greet each other with salutation Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh.
6. Guest from both parties get together and sing the hymn from Guru Granth Sahib.
7. The union of the bride and groom takes place in front of holy Guru Granth Sahib and the ceremonial rites are performed in Gurdawara or Wedding hall on the date agreed by both parties.
8. Both parties need to maintain close family ties. The parents of the bride and groom take meals at each other’s homes.
9. The newly wedded couples are initiated into Khalsa. This strengthens the unity of marriage.
