If you've never trained a dog before, it may seem like a daunting task. You can easily be lead to information overload because of all of the resources available to new trainers. Below are just a few tips to assist you in getting started at training your dog effectively.

Having more than one dog to train at a time will be a challenge. If you find that your dogs are not concentrating during training, then it may be necessary to train them independently, and then work on training them together.

When dogs are anxious or bored, they often engage in inappropriate chewing. If you give the dog a chew toy and put him in the safety of a dog crate, he can occupy himself while you're not at the house.

Disciplined leash walking is very important in dog training. This is important for both the dog's safety, and your own.

The most important part of dog training is to ensure that dog know its name. You will have more control over an obedient, well-trained animal. Call them to you at least ten times a day. In addition, you should never punish your dog for coming to you when you call its name.

It is best to pick a phrase for potty training your dog, and use it consistently. Every time you take him outside, tell him "go potty," (use whatever phrase you have chosen) and this will help him learn to focus and remember what he has gone outside to do.

Anxious dogs tend to chew things, including your upholstery. Crate training your dog and giving him items to play with while you're gone should help keep both your home and dog safe.

While training your puppy or dog to use a crate, introduce him to new concepts slowly and gradually, so he is able to adjust to the changes without feeling stressed. When they've settled down with the gate open, slowly shut it and pass treats through the gate. Start off only putting them inside for 10 seconds, and when they seem okay with that, slowly increase the time they are inside. If the puppy becomes upset, you may be progressing too quickly.

Walking on a leash is a big step in your dog's training. When they walk properly, it makes both of you safer when you both go walking.

If you will be away from the house for an extended period, leaving the dog alone when you are gone, take him on a long, vigorous walk before you leave. This will tire the dog out, and may help prevent any separation anxiety he may feel when you leave.

Stay consistent with the words you use to command your dog. Dogs are able to associate repeated words or actions with the requested response. Being consistent is key. You will be more successful this way.

If you are considering working with an animal behavior specialist, make sure you interview them and check out their reputation. Many behavior specialists will have different opinions on how to correctly train a dog, and you want to make sure that the professional is on the same page that you are.

There are several techniques to make crate training your dog easier. To get a hesitant dog enthusiastic about getting in a crate, put a tempting treat like a fresh chew toy inside and close it up while your dog is outside. They'll know the bone is in there and will want to go inside and get it. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.

It is not good for a puppy to train too often, it will wear it out if it has to process too much information. Remember that all dogs have short attention spans and puppies even more so. He'll likely forget everything you taught him if you do too much at once. He will also look at training as a negative experience and it will be harder next time.

Consistency is king when it comes to dog training, not only from you but also from each family member with whom your dog interacts daily interactions. Consistency is the best way to get your dog trained quickly. If someone is training the dog one way and someone else tries something different, the dog will become confused on how to behave properly.

You are the leader and you should not let the dog decide when he wants to listen. If you cannot wait for your order to be obeyed, do not ask anything of your pet.

Most owners are amazed at how easy it is to incorporate basic dog training into their life and how quickly they start to notice results. So if you are looking to change any of your dog's wayward ways, try some of our tips for quick success!
