There comes a time in most audiophile's lives when their hobby turns into a form of obsession as they hanker for even more performance improvements from their equipment. Clearly there are a huge number of ways of improving the performance of your sounds, whether that is changing pieces of kit on a habitual basis, almost for the sake of it, or by looking for improvements in the music format itself. Eventually, most audiophiles reach a point when they are happy with the gear they have, at least for the time being! However, there is always something new to look at and to make a decision on when it comes to new technology being released on the marketplace. The digital revolution and the march away from vinyl, and from CD's to digital formats, seems to have inflicted itself on almost everyone, and even the audiophile needs to take note. Cue the DAC or the Digital to Analogue Converter.
A digital to analogue converter is a piece of kit that simply converts digital signals, or in other words digital music sources such as CD, into an analogue signal. In many cases, the DAC is integrated in your equipment itself. However in some circumstances the quality of the DAC in these units are not of the highest quality so some people prefer to use a standalone unit to make audio improvements across many of the individual pieces of kit in their hi-fi set up.
Also with the digital revolution in many cases some people prefer to use digital sources such as the PC or Mac to house their music collections, so to have the ability to enhance these music sources can be quite important to make the most of the sounds coming from your computer, plus feeding these sources into a standalone DAC can be very beneficial. In many cases it can be a bit of a hassle to get digital computer sources fed into your hi-fi, so many people instead opt for a standalone DAC as a way to centralise their inputs, and to also standardize the sound from the various sources.
Certainly, if you are looking for improvements in the sound of your audio set up and you are keen too to either explore digital formats, or find a way to use these formats in your current system then it would be a good idea to look into whether a standalone DAC such as the Rega DAC can give you what you are looking to achieve.
