Winter is soon upon us and if previous years are anything to go by we will have snow this year too. And with snow comes troublesome roads where many are inadequately gritted or not gritted at all. Some people see this as a blessing, take time off work and cuddle up with a hot cuppa and some biscuits and leave the car on the drive but others try their best to get to work in the morning even if this means hours stuck in queues because of the hazardous conditions.
One option this year to make your life a bit easier would be to stick some winter tyres on your car. If you own a 4x4 you might not need it but for everybody else, there might be a gain in kitting your vehicle out with winter specific tyres. Last year manufacturers of tyres were caught out and supply ran out so this year there should be more tyres available.
But which tyre should you choose and is it even worth it? Some people might think that the week or so they are inconvenient by bad weather doesn't justify the high cost of a new set of tyres as a whole set will probably cost you around 500. But winter tyres are also effective in general cold conditions and give better give and traction than what a summer tyre would on cold and wet roads. One manufacture, Continental, even suggest you're better of driving on winter tyres all year round if your budget can't stretch to two sets. In the rest of Northern Europe this is not even a debate as two sets of tyres has been commonplace for years. In some countries it's even compulsory to drive with winter tyres during the colder winter months.
Where winter tyres excel over standard tyres in the colder months is both when it comes to braking on snow, snow traction and snow handling " the tyres are basically made for these kinds of conditions while the standard tyres will excel on dry and warm surfaces. But winter tyres are also better on aquaplaning, general handling in wet conditions, and braking on wet surfaces which all in all means that Continental's assessment of winter tyres being the best tyre to fit on your car might not be such a crazy idea.
So if you're looking to make it to work in your new Ford Focus this winter you might want to consider the above and decide to invest in an extra set of tyres for your car. It is proven to be a safer way to get trough winter and might even save you from having an accident.
