Many people choose to save extra money and go for second-hand cars when considering getting a first vehicle or perhaps a replacement or upgrade to their current model. There are many advantages to buying a second-hand car, but of course, many prefer to go to the new car sales areas and see if they can find a good deal on a brand new model. The advantage of doing this is that the car will have the longest possible lifespan for its particular model, since it will be fresh from the factory and have no wear and tear. In addition, car manufacturers offer warranties with their new cars, meaning that customers will benefit from a pre-paid initial service and full parts and labour cover should the car develop a fault in the early years of its life. Available guarantees are now very varied between the manufacturers with some offering extended warranties if the car is always regularly serviced at a main dealer. Other enticements, such as free servicing or free fuel for a period, are also on offer. If this sort of thing is important to you then shop around for the best deal.

In addition, buying a new car helps ensure that there are no outstanding maintenance issues with the vehicle. Even the most conscientious second-hand car seller cannot tell you all of the potential problems with a car, simply because they might still be developing and will only show up a year or two down the line. With new cars, quality assurance testing will ensure that the cars leave the forecourt with the absolute minimum issues possible. Overall, a new car will be more reliable and safer than the equivalent second-hand model.

Of course, the key problem with buying new cars is the price tag. Most cars tend to depreciate as soon as they are bought, meaning that their value at resale drops, depending on the popularity and reputation of the specific car. With some cars, this can be particularly steep, not because the car is bad in any way, but simply because that is how the market has developed for one reason or another. Therefore, there are some real bargains to be had with second-hand cars.

For people who are intending to keep their car for as long as possible, the depreciation issue is less of a concern. If you want to get a solid decade of use from your car, new is probably the way to go. Be sure to check out as many retailers as possible. Starting with online retailers to compare
